Muscle spasm in hypothyroidism

Muscle spasm is a common symptom when hyperthyroidism is changed to hypothyroidism using Radioiodine I-131 therapy  in first couple of months. Any strenuous exercise can promote strong, persistent contraction of your muscle. The first step is to check your blood for any electrolytes abnormalities in your blood. Usually it will show low level of calcium and you will increase your calcium intake in your food. If symptom do not go away, this spasm may be caused by low levels of potassium in your blood. Increasing high potassium food will solve this problem.

how to manage hypothyroidism

Before answer this question, we first need to understand what is hypothyroidism. By word, hypothyroidism is a low functional status of the thyroid, an organ located in front of the neck and regulate the basic working status of all organs like heart beat, respiration and many other life activities. All of life activities are automatic, that means it is out of your voluntary control. when the function of thyroid is low, all organs and tissues functions are low. So, you will experience low heart rate, often feeling cold(low metabolism in your skin) and constipation(low movement in your bowel). Also you will feel sleepy, easy fatigue and weight gain. Weight gain is probably is the most concerned and worried among any other symptoms because it can cause many other serious problems like high blood pressure, diabetes and arthritis. As time go by, it further can cause problem in the heart, liver and brain.

1. Management of weight gain

This is most important and first step to take in management of hypothyroidism because it can cause many other complications eventually if it is not well managed. Also it is mostly common complication of hypothyroidism.

For this step, the first thing you need to do is complete compliance with medicine. That means that you should take thyroxin every day at specific time, best in the Moring before taking breakfast for complete absorption in the bowel. The dose of thyroxin needs to adjusted according your basic signs and symptoms. You need to learn how to count heart rate, and pulse. Your normal heart rate is between 60-80 per minute. If you heart rate is below 60 and you have some other symptoms like, fussy vision, then you need increase your dose of medicine. But the most accurate method is to monitoring blood TSH, a hormone that regulate your level of thyroid hormone, which also reversely regulate the blood level of thyroid hormone. When TSH is high above normal range, you need gradually increase your thyroxin.

Dose of thyroxin differ greatly dependant on each individual. Everybody need to adjust the best dose for his own personal case.

The Second important issue is that many people usually forget their regular once a day strategy. This will cause a very bad to your control of hypothyroidism. You may end up with worsening of your symptoms like fatigue, blurriness in the eye and weight gain and you need increased dose of medicine to get full control of your problem. So you have to keep in mind that you must abide by strict compliance of medication. If you accidently miss one dose of your medication, you need take immediate action to take the missed one.

The third important thing to do is that you need to closely watch your weight every week, if not every day. Why so often? First of all, it is very good indicator how well your your medication works. If not well controlled, body body weight increase rapidly 1-5 pounds in one week depend on how much food you take every day and how much activities you done on daily basis. Secondly, it serve as the guidance for your daily food or calories intake and how much time you spend on the gym.
